Wes underwent successful surgery yesterday
Posted By: Nicolle • Posted On: 03 Feb 2010 •
As expected, Patriots receiver Wes Welker underwent surgery today at Massachusetts General Hospital, a source told The Herald. The goal was to repair his torn knee ligaments in his left knee.

As you read last month, Welker was waiting and waiting to have surgery, as he chilled while his MCL got a little better. It was 30 days from when Welker tore his knee against the Texans.

The surgery was performed by Thomas Gill, the team doctor for the Patriots. Colleague Karen Guregian was told the surgery was a grand success. So that’s good for Wes and the Patriots.

Welker is scheduled for surgery on tuesday

Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker has scheduled surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee for Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to an NFL source.

Welker tore both the anterior cruciate and the medial collateral ligaments in his left knee during the final game of the regular season against the Houston Texans Jan. 3, meaning the surgery will come almost exactly one month later.

Welker has waited for the MCL to heal first, to protect against an infection. When Tom Brady had his surgery last season, his knee became infected because it took place too soon for the MCL to heal.

The MCL can heal on its own but the ACL requires surgery, one doctor explained. The ACL is in the middle of the knee, which is filled with fluid. When the ACL is torn, the fluid prevents the tear from healing (picture a sliced finger under a faucet). The MCL, though, is on the outside of the knee, where very little fluid is present, and the tissue can heal on its own.

Welker will miss 6-12 months. He will likely not be ready to play by the start of next season, though it is possible, according to some doctors. Former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, who has experience tearing ligaments in his knee, estimated that Welker will miss 11 months, which would mean he could play in four regular-season games next season.

Welker is attempting to return from the same injury as Brady, but his position requires a more demanding recovery. Because Welker relies on quick cuts and explosive plays, it is more likely that he will take longer to make a full recovery

Patriots WR Wes Welker still awaiting knee surgery…

It has been 23 days since Patriots receiver Wes Welker tried to cut on the lumpy Houston Texans turf, tearing both the ACL and MCL in his left knee. It has been 20 days since he released a statement on his health and 14 days since he talked to a radio station in his hometown about his health.

So what’s been going on with Welker since then?

Nothing.

I’m told Welker (right, from AP) has not yet had surgery to repair the torn ligaments in his left knee. It is not clear when it’ll happen or where it’ll happen. But it has not taken place yet. But, he is in good spirits, considering…

And really, that’s not good or bad news. The intention had been, as Welker said, to allow the MCL to heal before going under the knife. He had told Jim Traber of WWLS Radio in Oklahoma City that, “We’re just taking our time right now. We’ve got a little bit of time right now to wait on that to heal and just kind of get ready and make sure that we exhaust all the options.”

Wes - "i pretty much knew"

Wes Welker had his most extensive discussion yet regarding his season-injury knee injury, speaking to his hometown WWLS radio in Oklahoma City. Watching him cut and crumble against the Texans, if you said to yourself, ‘He’s done,’ you agreed with Welker himself.

“I pretty much knew right when it happened that my season was probably over," Welker said, via Sports Radio Interviews. “Then talking to the doctors, they let me know what they think probably happened, which I probably already knew what happened. It was kind of tough especially that first 24 hours or so was rough. Once you came to the realization of what it was, it was just another obstacle that you were trying to overcome. All the texts, emails and everything from everybody, just trying to lift your spirits. You just gotta move on from it and realize that you have a lot of work ahead of you to get back for the next year.”

Welker said he has yet to schedule any surgery. Because both his medial collateral ligament and his anterior crucitate ligament are torn, the MCL needs to heal before the doctors can operate on the ACL. (A doctor I spoke with explained it like this: The ACL is in the middle of the knee, surrounded by fluid. That fluid keeps the tear from healing – think about what happens if you cut your finger and put it under a faucet. The MCL wraps around the outside of the knee, where there is little fluid, so it can heal on its own.)

While Welker waits, he feels the disappointment of the way his season ended and, more so, the way the Patriots’ season ended. He agreed when host Jim Traber brought up the Patriots not meeting expectations.

“Yeah, I definitely understand what you’re saying especially when you win 17 or 18 games in a row you kinda look at this team like we’re invincible and things like that,” Welker said. “This is definitely a down year for us, our standards and what we want to live up to. We were definitely a different team this year than what we were in the past. We had a lot of veteran guys that were a staple on this team that weren’t there anymore. You gotta fill that void somehow and that takes time. We definitely didn’t have the people in there to fill that void that we needed.”

Following the Texans game, coach Bill Belichick had some nasty things to say about the field at Reliant Stadium. Welker was not as strident as Belichick, but he did not even come close to absolving the playing surface.

“Definitely, the field was rough,” Welker said. “It’s almost like I replay that play in my head so many times now. I remember taking that step and I was gonna kind of try and explode through but with that field I didn’t know if the ground was going to come out from under me, if it was going to give a little bit, or if it was going to stay firm. I remember in my mind thinking I didn’t know what was going to happen in regards to that. From there, my knee just buckled and it was what it was. I hate to bash it or anything but it’s not the best field out there. There’s a lot of inconsistencies as far as being able to play on and things like that.”

Wes Speaks

Wes posted this message on his 83 Foundation website regarding his injury.

Dear Friends, Fans, and Family,

I am writing you today to let you know how thankful I am for everyone's support through this trying time. Your phone calls, texts, emails, and letters are greatly appreciated. I thank God for the people that He has put in my life to help me overcome this obstacle that has been placed in front of me. Your thoughts and prayers are truly felt and will help me to a speedy recovery.

My good friend Tedy Bruschi said to me the other day "there is no career without a comeback." Although, I know that it will take time to be the same player that I once was. I am ready to face that challenge, and in time, I plan on coming back the player I was and much more. This is not the first time that I have faced adversity in my career, and it won't be the last. I am committed to this football team and doing everything possible to make us better. My teammates know my commitment to them, and I refuse to let them down. Just how I know that they wouldn't let me down. They are here for me, just like I am there for them. Even though I won't be on the field this post season, my heart will be with them through every snap!

I will continue to keep everyone informed on my status, and I thank you again for all of your thoughts and prayers.

God Bless,

Wes
