Welker surprised by reaction to his return

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — For Wes Welker, his presence on the practice field was just another step in his comeback from a major knee injury.
Fans and reporters saw it differently. Might the New England Patriots star receiver defy forecasts and actually be able to return for the season opener?
Even Welker was surprised by the optimistic, almost giddy, reaction to last Wednesday’s workout where he did agility drills, ran routes and caught passes from Tom Brady precisely four months after surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
“I didn’t think it’d be that big a deal,” Welker said after a similar session Monday during the Patriots organized team activities. “I’ve been pushing it and trying to get ready and get out there with my teammates, get a few reps and try and get better as much as we can.”

Celtics cheerleader – and New England running back — Wes Welker, who had a season-ending knee injury last year, used his JumboTron face-time during the game to jump up and jog in place to show off his surgically repaired joint. Like the Garden crowd wasn’t excited enough!
Here is a photo from the game and also 2 from Wes’ football camp last weekend.
Wes Welker aware of Playboy image

BRAINTREE – As serious as he is about rehabilitating his left knee and right shoulder, it wasn’t the impression Wes Welker wanted to leave. At least, he can laugh about it now.
The photo of the Patriots [team stats] receiver dressed in a bathrobe posing with playmate Ashley Dupre lit up the Internet, a souvenir from the pajama party that Welker attended in March at the Playboy Mansion. It led some to bad jokes and perhaps worse conclusions about his offseason.
“It’s funny, man,” Welker told the Herald during a break at the Old Spice Wes Welker Football Camp yesterday. “I’ve been working so hard, and it’s like, ‘Oh, Wes is rehabbing at the Playboy Mansion or something.’ I’m like, ‘Dude, it’s one night.’ ”

Now, Patriots WR Wes Welker says he injured “just the ACL”
from the bostonherald.com
As Wes Welker is making more and more public appearances, we’re learning more and more about his rehabilitation process. Tonight, he hosted his “Cleats and Cocktails” fundraiser at the Oklahoma History Center, shedding some interesting light on his knee.
According to the Associated Press article just posted, Welker said that, actually, he injured “just the ACL.”
It’s just a snippet of a quote, and it’s tough to tell context. But that’s interesting… because it had been reported by me and others that he tore both the ACL and MCL.
In fact, Welker discussed taking time to “let the MCL heal first“ in one of his first interviews after surgery. That’s why he waited a month for the procedure. Now, he said it wasn’t injured.
For clarification, I emailed the AP reporter, Jeff Latzke, who said that one reporter there posed a question about tearing the MCL and ACL and Wes corrected by saying, “just the ACL.”
Perhaps the article could’ve been worded more precise to differentiate between “injuring” and “tearing.” But a sprain is a small tear, so I don’t know.
There was no follow-up, as the reporters may not have been aware that it didn’t jibe with what had been reported… until afterward.
Perhaps this is a positive sign, meaning Welker’s knee wasn’t torn up as much as we thought. But I’m not really sure what to make of it, to be honest
