from Bleacher Report

Wes Welker is willing to play for the $9.5 million, one-year franchise tag from the New England Patriots. But in saying as much in an interview on WEEI on Monday, Welker practically gave up all of his leverage.

“There’s nine and a half million reasons why I wouldn’t miss any regular season games,” he said on “Mut & Merloni” on Monday afternoon (via Pro Football Talk), “so you don’t have to worry about that.”

It’s not exactly news, as he said it on NFL Network’s “Total Access” over a month ago, although he had indicated that he might not sign the tender in time for the June 12-14 minicamp, saying that he was “still looking to try and decide on that,” and adding that he was “in no rush.”

His stance on that hasn’t changed much—he would like to be at camp, but he won’t say one way or another for sure just yet.

FOXBOROUGH – Wes Welker pulled a bit of a surprise move Tuesday, signing the franchise tender the Patriots placed on him in March.

Now that he has signed the tender, which guarantees the perennial Pro Bowl wide receiver $9.515 million for the 2012 season, Welker can rejoin the team. New England begins on-field organized team activities Monday.

Welker took to Twitter to announce his move, posting: “I signed my tender today. I love the game and I love my teammates! Hopefully doing the right things gets the right results. #leapoffaith’’

By “doing the right thing,’’ Welker likely meant not holding out in the hopes that he’ll get the security of a long-term contract. It is believed the sides have been talking recently in an effort to do just that.

By returning to the team, Welker, 31, essentially forfeits his only leverage. He can now participate in OTAs and full-team minicamp next month.

New England had plenty of cap space to cover Welker’s franchise number before restructuring Tom Brady’s contract, and Matt Light’s retirement gave it even more room, so the financial concerns aren’t there for the club, which has the option of franchising Welker again next year for 120 percent of his 2012 salary – or about $11.4 million.

Therefore, any discussion of a long-term deal likely would have to start at $21 million, which is about what Welker would make if he were to be franchised this season and next.

Of course, if Welker suffers a serious injury this season, the chances of the team franchising him again go down significantly, so he is taking a risk from that perspective.

As recently as Monday, when he spoke on WEEI, Welker said he wanted to take part in minicamp but hadn’t decided whether he would or not. He made it clear, however, that he would not hold out in the season, saying he had “9.5 million reasons’’ not to miss any games.

It was a softened stance compared with a couple of weeks ago, when Welker said he “probably’’ wasn’t going to take part in minicamp. Earlier this offseason, Welker, who has an NFL-best 554 receptions in his five seasons with the Patriots, said he felt he deserved a long-term contract.

Welker is part of a stacked group of receivers that will start competing for roster spots beginning next week. The team has a dozen under contract, including Brandon Lloyd, Deion Branch, Donté Stallworth, Jabar Gaffney, Chad Ochocinco, Anthony Gonzalez, Julian Edelman, and draft pick Jeremy Ebert.

Welker is holding his annual football clinic this weekend at Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody.

As part of his interview on ESPN Boston Radio on Tuesday (listen to it HERE), Patriots receiver Wes Welker was asked about comments made by Gisele Bunchden, supermodel wife of quarterback Tom Brady, after the Super Bowl in which she blasted her husband’s pass catchers.
“My husband can not f—— throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times,” Bundchen said immediately after the game, in a video captured by theinsider.com, a gossip website.

Welker dropped a crucial Brady pass late in the Super Bowl XLVI loss. So was there any awkwardness between Welker and Bunchden, who were photographed — along with Brady and Welker’s fiancee — on a Costa Rica beach earlier this year?

New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker, who was tagged as the Patriots’ franchise player last month and has yet to sign his tender or participate in voluntary workouts, said Tuesday he has not had any talks with the team on a long-term deal since being tagged and did not think he would attend mandatory minicamp if there wasn’t progress toward a long-term deal.

“Through my body of work, through the past five years, I think what I’ve done I’ve earned a long-term deal,” he said in an interview with Adam Jones on ESPN Boston Radio on Tuesday (listen to the interview HERE). “It’s what I am looking for and what I want. Hopefully that’s the case and hopefully we come to something where we can make that happen.”

The soon-to-be-31-year-old Welker said he hasn’t spoken with the team about the contract extension he is seeking since the team placed the franchise tag on him in early March.

In its infinite quest to make everything league-related into a major event, the NFL has finally, and to great fanfare, released the 2012 regular season schedule.

We’ve known for some time which teams the Patriots would be facing, but now we know when and in what order they’ll be facing those 13 opponents.

Some analysis/highlights:

* The Pats are currently scheduled to play four prime-time games. Remember that could change with late-season flex scheduling, but no team can play more than five regular-season prime-time games, so only one more could be added.

* New England will return to the traditional 1 p.m. game slot. After playing just four at that time last year, the Pats currently have nine 1 p.m. kickoffs this season.

* As is customary for teams playing in the London game, which will be played on Oct. 28, the Pats’ bye week is the week after that game with the Rams. A Week 9 bye is right in the middle of the season, which is good timing.

* New England plays three of its first four games on the road, opening in Tennessee (where twins Devin and Jason McCourty will see their teams face off for the first time) on Sept. 9, then to Baltimore for a Sunday Night game on Sept. 23 and in Buffalo on Sept. 30. Considering the Pats’ final two preseason games are on the road, they’ll be away from Gillette Stadium for five of six games.

The Patriots started their voluntary offseason training program Monday, and at least one player was not present, according to a league source: receiver Wes Welker.

It is neither a surprise nor a major issue that Welker, who was franchised by the Patriots, was not present for the start of the offseason program. Welker has not signed his tender, and there has been little progress on a long-term deal. He’s not required to take part – both because it is voluntary and he isn’t under contract. And it’s a way to quietly protest his status.

Players who have tendered but have not signed it have the option of signing a waiver to participate in the workouts.

During an interview with NFL Network last week, Welker said he was “in no rush’’ to sign the tender and take part in the offseason program. Exclusive rights free agent Kyle Love signed his tender and reported to Gillette Stadium, a league source said.
